ASSOCIATE ATTORNEY

San Francisco Baykeeper seeks to hire an Associate Attorney. As the Bay’s most effective advocate for twenty years, Baykeeper’s highly skilled staff uses advocacy, litigation and science to strengthen and enforce clean water laws to keep pollution out of the Bay. The Associate Attorney will report to the Baykeeper Staff Attorney and will work collaboratively with outside counsel and co-plaintiffs.Position to begin August, 2010. Graduating law students who plan to sit for the July, 2010, California bar exam are encouraged to apply.

Primary responsibilities will include:

Litigation Development and Management – Approximately 45%

  • Assist with developing and prosecuting enforcement actions, conducting settlement negotiations, and monitoring compliance with past settlement agreements.
  • Conduct field investigation, public records review, and other case research and writing.
  • Maintain legal files and case database.

Policy Advocacy and Research – Approximately 45%

  • Provide review, research, and written and public comment on proposed regulations and permits.
  • Assist with researching, writing, and filing petitions for agency review.
  • Track, analyze and report on statutory, regulatory, and judicial developments relevant to Baykeeper’s work.
  • Undertake legal analysis and policy research to help guide Baykeeper’s future strategies to protect the Bay.

Organizational Support – Approximately 10%

  • Attend meetings of the Baykeeper Board of Directors and relevant committees.
  • Work flexibly with Baykeeper program and development staff, and media, as necessary.

Qualifications: Must possess a desire to investigate pollution cases on the ground and on the water; excellent interpersonal communication and professional demeanor; good writing skills and public speaking experience; good judgment and initiative; ability to successfully manage multiple deadlines; flexibility and a good sense of humor; a passion for Baykeeper’s mission to protect the Bay; and a desire to become part of a collaborative, visionary, and highly effective organization. Familiarity with clean water laws and relevant undergraduate degree are desirable. Candidates must be admitted to the California bar, or sit for the July, 2010, California bar exam.

Compensation: This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, and outstanding benefits package.
